Over this holiday, New Brunswick lost one the greatest politicians it has produced. The Honourable Gordon Fairweather passed away this Christmas Eve. He was 85. Over his career, Fairweather held a seat at the Legislature as Attorney General, the Canadian House of Commons as an elected Member of Parliament, and the Canadian Human Rights Commission as the first appointed Chief Commissioner. During his great service he received a vast amount of awards which included the Order of Canada and the Order of New Brunswick. Our national recognition as a bi-cultural province, unique to New Brunswick, is owed to Gordon Fairweather just as much as Louis J. Robichaud (another provincial hero).
Fairweather's voice was much appreciated during the Post Secondary Education Commission controversy. I encourage you to revisit the speech he delivered at a rally in support of keeping UNBSJ as University campus, not a polytechnic.
